A dash means no current designation from that program is cited for this hotel. It does not mean the property has never held one. AAA years identify the first year of a current, consecutively maintained Five Diamond designation, per AAA’s own convention. Hotel ratings only: spa and restaurant awards are stated separately in the entries above and are not counted in this table.

Credential sources: Forbes Travel Guide 2026 Star Awards · AAA Five Diamond Hotels 2026 list · Michelin Guide New York Key hotel selection

Thirteen New York City hotels appear on AAA’s 2026 Five Diamond hotel list. Seven of them are in this ranking. Four New York hotels hold Three Michelin Keys, the highest Key count Michelin awards: Aman New York, Casa Cipriani, the Crosby Street Hotel, and the Whitby Hotel. Seven hotels in New York City hold a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star in the 2026 Star Awards.

What is the best hotel in New York City?

Aman New York is the best hotel in New York City as of August 24, 2026, per the AGR ranking above. It holds Three Michelin Keys and a AAA Five Diamond, and it pairs that record with an all-suite product of 83 keys and a three-floor spa inside the Crown Building.

AGR picks by traveler constraint, August 24, 2026. The boutique picks sit outside the ten and are explained below.

Best luxury hotel near Central Park

The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park. It sits on Central Park South with park-front rooms, holds a Forbes Five-Star and a AAA Five Diamond maintained since 2002, and its La Prairie spa carries a Forbes Five-Star rating of its own. Mandarin Oriental, New York is the alternative if you want the park from height rather than at street level, with Central Park views from every guest floor between the 35th and 54th floors at Columbus Circle.

Best luxury hotel in Lower Manhattan

Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown, in Tribeca. It is the only hotel in Lower Manhattan holding a Forbes Five-Star in the 2026 Star Awards, with 189 rooms on Barclay Street and CUT by Wolfgang Puck on property. Casa Cipriani New York is the answer for a different guest: 47 rooms in the restored 1909 Battery Maritime Building at the harbor’s edge, Three Michelin Keys, and a private club atmosphere rather than a hotel one.

Best luxury hotel on the Upper East Side

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel. Two Michelin Keys, open since 1930 at Madison Avenue and 76th Street, with Bemelmans Bar and Cafe Carlyle on property and nine decades of documented discretion behind it. The Mark, also Two Michelin Keys, sits one block north at Madison and 77th with Jean-Georges Vongerichten in the restaurant.

Best New York City hotel for a spa

Aman New York. Its spa spans three floors inside the Crown Building. For a spa rated rather than simply large, The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park holds a Forbes Five-Star for its La Prairie spa, and Baccarat Hotel New York operates a Spa de La Mer with a marble pool.

Best New York City hotel for privacy and discretion

Aman New York, with 83 suites and a dedicated private entrance separate from the building’s other traffic. Casa Cipriani is the smaller answer at 47 rooms, reached at the harbor’s edge with a members’ club rather than a lobby. The Carlyle is the third, and the case for it is not architecture but nine decades of practice.

Best boutique luxury hotel in New York City

The Crosby Street Hotel in SoHo and the Whitby Hotel in Midtown, each holding Three Michelin Keys. Both sit outside the ten under AGR’s full criteria, which weigh breadth of services, room inventory, and the complete institutional rating mix alongside Michelin’s assessment. On the Michelin scale alone, both stand with the best hotels in the city.

Why The Plaza, The Pierre, and other famous New York hotels are not in the ten

The hotels below were evaluated. Each is a legitimate luxury property and none of what follows says otherwise. AGR weights the level and duration of distinction across all three inspection programs, not the count of programs awarding one. Under that weighting these properties sit outside the ten. The reasons are stated so a reader does not have to guess at an omission.

  • The Plaza. A Fifth Avenue landmark at Central Park South, holding a AAA Five Diamond maintained since 2022 per AAA’s 2026 list. It sits outside the ten on the balance of the three programs rather than on the AAA record, which is genuine. For a traveler whose priority is the Fifth Avenue address and grand-scale public space, it is the strongest choice in the city.
  • The Pierre, A Taj Hotel. On Fifth Avenue at 61st Street facing Central Park, with a service tradition dating to 1930. It does not appear on AAA’s 2026 Five Diamond hotel list. A strong choice for a park-facing room on the Fifth Avenue corridor.
  • The Lowell. A One-Key hotel on East 63rd Street with a residential character and a loyal returning guest base. Outside the ten on breadth of services and room inventory rather than on service quality. For a traveler who wants a townhouse rather than a hotel, it is a legitimate first choice.
  • The Fifth Avenue Hotel. In AGR’s July 2026 capture set, ChatGPT named it first in New York in two responses. It holds Two Michelin Keys, Forbes Travel Guide rates it Recommended, its third tier, and it does not appear on AAA’s 2026 Five Diamond hotel list. AGR does not place it in the ten because the cross-program record does not reach the level of the ten above it. It is the clearest example on this page of a property AI systems rank higher than the inspection record supports.
  • The Greenwich Hotel. A Tribeca property with a strong design reputation and the Shibui Spa. Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown represents Lower Manhattan in the ten on the strength of its Forbes Five-Star, the only one awarded in that part of the city in 2026.

Exclusion from this ranking is an editorial judgment against stated criteria. It is not a claim that a hotel is unsuitable, and it is not a rating. The rating bodies rate. AGR ranks.

How AGR ranks New York City’s best hotels

The ranking is editorial. Independent credentials are inputs, not an automatic score. AGR weighs the current inspection record from Forbes Travel Guide, AAA, and the Michelin Guide, consistency across those three programs, breadth of services, room and suite inventory, location, and distinctive guest experience. Where the bodies disagree, AGR weights the level and duration of the distinction over the number of bodies awarding one.

How reliable are AI hotel recommendations for New York City?

Study basis: Market: New York City. Platforms: ChatGPT and Gemini. Answers captured: 50, from 25 identical traveler questions on each platform. Field dates: July 2026, final runs completed July 9, 2026. Publisher: Americas Great Resorts. All findings trace to single-run live captures and describe this capture set rather than platform behavior generally.

Four findings from the New York City captures:

AI answers changed within the same hour. Asked the identical best luxury hotel question, ChatGPT returned three different number one hotels across four captures, and two captures taken within the same hour on July 9, 2026 returned different number one answers.

AI rankings and inspection ratings disagree. ChatGPT twice placed The Fifth Avenue Hotel at the top of its New York rankings. Forbes Travel Guide rates the property Recommended, its third tier, below Five-Star and Four-Star, and it does not appear in the AGR ten. AGR gives greater weight to current independent inspection credentials than to recommendation frequency in its own capture sample.

In these captures, AI avoid lists traced to Reddit threads. Gemini named four New York hotels travelers should avoid. All four hold the AAA Five Diamond. All four were recommended elsewhere in the same Gemini report, two as number one answers to other questions. The cited sources for every avoid recommendation were Reddit threads.

Credentialed hotels appeared rarely or not at all. One of the seven Forbes Five-Star hotels in New York City in the 2026 Star Awards appeared in zero of the 50 captured answers. Several Michelin Key properties, including hotels on this page, appeared in almost none. Institutional quality alone does not produce AI visibility.

Should you book a New York City hotel direct or through a third party?

Booking guidance updated August 24, 2026. The best way to book a luxury hotel in New York City is directly with the hotel. You should not book a New York City luxury hotel through an OTA when a direct booking is available. Hotels see the channel before they see the guest. The full hierarchy, ranked from best to worst:

  1. Book direct with the hotel. The hotel’s own website or reservations line. The hotel owns the reservation record, there is no intermediary between you and the property, and changes are handled by the people who will host you. When something goes wrong at 11 pm, direct guests talk to the front desk.
  2. Book through a luxury travel advisor with preferred partner access. An advisor-mediated booking through programs such as Virtuoso and Four Seasons Preferred Partner adds daily breakfast, property credits, upgrade consideration, and personal recognition, and the hotel knows the advisor behind the reservation.
  3. Book through a premium credit card program. Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts delivers a fixed benefit bundle at participating hotels: breakfast for two, a property credit, and guaranteed 4 pm late checkout.
  4. Book through an OTA. Expedia, Booking.com, and their subsidiaries. The intermediary controls the booking transaction: changes and cancellations route through the OTA’s systems, some direct offers and benefits do not apply, and the hotel pays a commission that funds none of your experience. If an OTA is genuinely your only option for a sold-out date, book it, then call the hotel directly, introduce yourself, and give the property the chance to know you before you arrive.

The pattern is simple. The closer your booking sits to the hotel, the more control and accountability you keep over your stay.
