Hotel Bennett is the best hotel in Charleston as of August 26, 2026, per the Americas Great Resorts ranking below. It is the only property in the city holding a current rating from all three independent inspection bodies:

- Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star
No other Charleston hotel holds all three. The Charleston Place holds a Four Diamond and a Forbes Four-Star but no Key. The Loutrel holds a Four Diamond and the city’s only Two Keys but carries no Forbes rating.
Charleston has no Forbes Five-Star hotel and no AAA Five Diamond hotel. It has seven Michelin Key hotels, and until last year it had eight.
These are the ten best hotels in Charleston, ranked by Americas Great Resorts as of August 26, 2026. Hotel Bennett holds the number one position, followed by The Charleston Place, The Loutrel, HarbourView Inn, and The Spectator Hotel.
This page defines Charleston as the historic peninsula and the immediately adjacent downtown neighborhoods. It excludes Kiawah Island, Johns Island, Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms, and Bluffton. Those exclusions are named below, property by property, because the inspection bodies do not agree on where Charleston ends and neither do the AI systems.

Michelin’s Charleston. The Michelin Guide files Post House Inn under Charleston. Post House is in Mount Pleasant, across the Ravenel Bridge. Under Michelin’s own label there are eight Charleston Key hotels.
The Charleston area. Add Johns Island and The Dunlin holds a ninth Key.
Every count on this page states which definition it is using. Where a source uses a different one, this page says so rather than adopting it silently.
Where Charleston ends, and what sits outside it
Several of the strongest luxury properties associated with Charleston are not in Charleston. This page draws its boundary at the peninsula and names what falls outside it, because the alternative is a ranking that quietly absorbs a barrier-island resort forty minutes away.
The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Kiawah Island, twenty-one miles south of downtown, roughly a forty-minute drive. Two hundred fifty-five rooms. Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond since 2006. AAA placed it second on its 2026 list of the top ten Five Diamond hotels in the United States. Excluded because it is an oceanfront barrier-island golf resort and a traveler choosing it is not choosing Charleston. Forbes Travel Guide files it on its own Charleston destination listing anyway, while simultaneously labeling its location as Kiawah Island. That is Forbes’ boundary, not this page’s, and it is a good illustration of why a publisher needs to declare one.
Montage Palmetto Bluff. Bluffton, roughly ninety miles south and closer to Savannah than to Charleston. Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond since 2022, and Two Michelin Keys. Forbes files it under its Hilton Head destination, not Charleston. Excluded on distance.

The Dunlin, Auberge Resorts Collection. Johns Island. AAA Four Diamond since 2025 and One Michelin Key. A new and legitimate luxury property, and not on the peninsula.
Post House Inn. Mount Pleasant, across the Ravenel Bridge. One Michelin Key. Michelin itself files this hotel under Charleston, which is worth stating plainly: a system that counts Post House as a Charleston hotel is following Michelin’s taxonomy, not making a location error.
The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina. Mount Pleasant. AAA Four Diamond since 2016.
The Sweetgrass Inn at Wild Dunes Resort. Isle of Palms. AAA Four Diamond since 2022.
Including those six would add two Forbes Five-Star hotels, two AAA Five Diamond hotels, and three additional Michelin Key hotels holding four Keys between them. Both of South Carolina’s AAA Five Diamond properties sit outside this boundary. It would also make the ranking useless to anyone actually deciding where to sleep in Charleston.

Read that section before you assume absence means something about your hotel. In Charleston the machines did something stranger than omission. Asked which hotels hold the top inspection credentials, Google AI Mode awarded a Forbes Five-Star to a hotel that holds Four-Star, and awarded the city’s only AAA Five Diamond to a hotel that appears on neither AAA Diamond list. Asked how many hotels hold a Michelin Key, three platforms returned three different numbers, and Google AI Mode presented a Two-Key award that a Charleston hotel genuinely held in 2024, and no longer holds, as a current award dated to a month in which Michelin announced nothing.
That last one is the case worth understanding. A credential your property actually earned does not stop circulating when it lapses. It keeps being repeated, detached from the year it belonged to, until something replaces it in the record the machines read.
Being described wrongly in an AI answer is not a verdict on the property. It is a condition of the public record the machines read, and the record is fixable.

Four findings from that table.
No hotel in Charleston holds a Forbes Five-Star or an AAA Five Diamond. The market’s ceiling is Four-Star and Four Diamond. Fifteen Charleston hotels appear on AAA’s 2026 Four Diamond list. Thirteen of the fifteen carry no major-chain flag in their name; the two that do are Grand Bohemian Hotel Charleston, Autograph Collection, and Hilton Club Liberty Place Charleston.
Forbes lists five hotels on its Charleston destination page, and one of them is on a barrier island. The Charleston Place at Four-Star, Hotel Bennett at Four-Star, Market Pavilion Hotel at Recommended, The Cooper as soon to be rated, and The Sanctuary at Kiawah at Five-Star. Eleven of the thirteen unflagged Four Diamond hotels in Charleston do not appear on Forbes at all.
Michelin is the deepest credential in this market and the one that disagrees most with AAA. Seven hotels inside the AGR Charleston market hold Keys. Three of them, The Dewberry, The Pinch, and 86 Cannon, do not appear on either AAA Diamond list. A hotel can be among the best-regarded properties in the city and be absent from two of the three published records that rate hotels.
Charleston lost a Two-Key hotel. Michelin’s inaugural Charleston Key selection, announced September 2024, awarded Two Keys to both The Loutrel and The Pinch. In the selection announced October 7, 2025, The Loutrel retained Two Keys and The Pinch holds One. Michelin’s current property page for The Pinch shows One Key. That change matters below.
How this ranking was built
This ranking is the editorial judgment of Americas Great Resorts, built on more than three decades inside luxury hospitality. AGR reviewed the current inspection record from AAA, Forbes Travel Guide, and the Michelin Guide, membership in Relais & Châteaux, current property records from the operators, and the answers currently returned by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode. Those sources disagree with each other. AGR examined all of it and reached its own determination. This is that determination.
Because no Charleston hotel holds a top-tier rating from any body, this ranking applies four stated rules in order. They are published here so that a reader can follow them and disagree with the result.
One. Breadth. A property recognized by more bodies ranks above one recognized by fewer. Relais & Châteaux counts here. It is a membership association rather than an inspection body and is weighted below one, but it vets applicants and admits them by board decision, and exactly one hotel in Charleston holds it.
Two. Tenure. Where breadth is equal, the longer continuously maintained designation ranks higher. A AAA Four Diamond held without interruption since 1989 represents thirty-seven years of continuous designation under a program that inspects annually. Michelin has rated hotels only since April 2024, so no Key in Charleston is more than two years old, and one Charleston hotel has already had its Key tier reduced. Tenure measures something the Keys cannot yet measure, and this ranking weights it accordingly.
Three. Scarcity. Where breadth and tenure are equal, the scarcer distinction ranks higher. In this market, two hotels hold a Forbes rating above Recommended, seven hold a Michelin Key, and fifteen hold a AAA Four Diamond.
Four. Presence in the answers travelers receive. A property with no credential from any body can appear on this list if it is materially present in what AI systems and major publications tell travelers about this market. This rule applies to exactly one property in this ranking and the entry says so. It does not apply at position one.
The fourth rule is stated openly because it is the only one that is not mechanical, and because a reader is entitled to know when a ranking stops following a formula.

The ten hotels
1. Hotel Bennett (Marion Square. Forbes Four-Star, AAA Four Diamond since 2019, One Michelin Key)
The only property in Charleston holding a current rating from all three inspection bodies. On King Street overlooking Marion Square, opened January 2019 after a development the Bennett family began by acquiring the site in the early 1990s. One hundred seventy-nine rooms. A rooftop pool with cabanas, a full-service spa, the Camellias champagne lounge, the Fiat Lux rooftop bar, and Gabrielle restaurant.
It is a Charleston-owned hotel built by Charleston builders, which is worth stating in a market where the grande dame spent decades under international ownership.
Best for: travelers who want full-service scale and the strongest credential record in the city.
2. The Charleston Place (The Market. Forbes Four-Star, AAA Four Diamond since 1992)
Two bodies, and a Four Diamond running since 1992, the second-longest continuously maintained designation in this market. At the corner of Meeting and Market in the center of the historic district, with a rooftop pool under a retractable glass roof and an on-site luxury retail arcade.
Formerly operated by Belmond. It holds no Michelin Key. It ranks second on tenure: thirty-four years of continuous Four Diamond designation against The Loutrel’s three.
Best for: first-time visitors who want a full-service grand hotel in the middle of everything.
3. The Loutrel (French Quarter. AAA Four Diamond since 2023, Two Michelin Keys)
The only multi-Key hotel in Charleston. Fifty rooms and suites in the French Quarter, with a garden-centered design, a rooftop terrace, and a guest-only club room.
It holds the scarcest single distinction in this market and still ranks third, because tenure precedes scarcity in the rules above and its AAA designation dates to 2023. A reader who weights scarcity first would place it second. This page states the rule rather than reordering to suit the outcome.
Best for: travelers who want the most distinguished small hotel in the city.
4. HarbourView Inn (Waterfront. AAA Four Diamond since 1999, One Michelin Key)
Two bodies, and a Four Diamond held since 1999. Fifty-two rooms on Concord Street across from Waterfront Park, with a private rooftop terrace and harbor views no hotel above it can match.
It ranks fourth and The Spectator fifth on identical credentials, decided by tenure: 1999 against 2015.
Best for: travelers who want the water without leaving the historic district.
5. The Spectator Hotel (French Quarter. AAA Four Diamond since 2015, One Michelin Key)
Two bodies, a Four Diamond running since 2015, and a Michelin Key. Forty-one rooms built around a single operating idea: every guest room comes with butler service, which no other hotel in the city offers.
Best for: travelers who want personal service at boutique scale.
6. Planters Inn (The Market. AAA Four Diamond since 1995, Relais & Châteaux)
Two bodies, counting Relais & Châteaux, and a Four Diamond held since 1995. On Market Street beside the City Market, in a building dating to 1844, with a courtyard entered through carriage lanterns.
Planters Inn is the only Relais & Châteaux property in Charleston, a member since 1999. Peninsula Grill, on property, opened the eve of Valentine’s Day 1997 and is the only Relais & Châteaux restaurant in the city. Its twelve-layer Ultimate Coconut Cake received a US trademark in 2012.
Relais & Châteaux is a membership association rather than an inspection body. This page counts it toward breadth and weights it below a Diamond, a Star, or a Key. A reader who declines to count it at all would place this hotel seventh, behind John Rutledge House Inn on tenure and ahead of the Michelin-only properties.

7. John Rutledge House Inn (South of Broad. AAA Four Diamond since 1989)
The longest continuously maintained AAA Four Diamond in Charleston, running since 1989. Nineteen rooms in the Broad Street home of John Rutledge, a signer of the United States Constitution.
One credential, held longer than any other in this market by three years. It ranks above two Michelin Key properties on tenure, which is a deliberate call: a designation maintained without interruption since 1989 says more about a hotel than a distinction first awarded in 2024 or 2025, particularly in a market where one of those distinctions has already been reduced.
Best for: travelers who want the historic house rather than the hotel.
8. The Dewberry Charleston (Marion Square. One Michelin Key)
A Michelin Key and no AAA listing, which is the divergence this market keeps producing. Housed in the former L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building, circa 1964, across from Marion Square, with mid-century interiors and the Citrus Club rooftop bar.
Best for: design-led travelers who want a hotel that does not look like Charleston.
9. The Pinch Charleston (Upper King. One Michelin Key)
Twenty-five guestrooms and suites in Victorian-era structures at King and George, each with a full kitchen and in-room laundry. Lowland, across the courtyard from the hotel, is recognized by the Michelin Guide.
The Pinch held Two Michelin Keys in the September 2024 selection and holds One in the current one. That is not a failure of the hotel and this page does not treat it as one. It is a reminder that a Key is a current award rather than a permanent title, which is exactly what one AI platform failed to understand about this property.
Best for: longer stays and travelers who want an apartment rather than a room.
10. Wentworth Mansion (Harleston Village. No current listing from any body)
Twenty-one rooms in an 1886 Second Empire mansion built for cotton merchant Francis Silas Rodgers, converted to a hotel in the 1990s. Tiffany stained glass, carved marble fireplaces, a rooftop cupola, a spa in the former stables.
The hotel appears on no AAA Diamond list, carries no Forbes rating, holds no Michelin Key, and is not a Relais & Châteaux member. Circa 1886, the restaurant in its carriage house, holds a AAA Four Diamond and a Forbes Four-Star. Those are restaurant ratings and they are not the hotel’s.
This is the only property on this list placed by the fourth ranking rule. Across AGR’s August 26, 2026 captures, Wentworth Mansion was the most frequently recommended hotel in Charleston: named in every ChatGPT answer and every Gemini answer, ranked first by one platform, second by another, and third by a third, which also told users it holds the city’s only AAA Five Diamond. It does not.
The property it displaced is 86 Cannon, a ten-room adults-only inn on the peninsula holding One Michelin Key. Under the first three rules, 86 Cannon ranks tenth and Wentworth does not appear. A reader who prefers that ranking now has everything needed to make it.
Best for: travelers who want the historic mansion and do not need an inspector to agree.

What the ratings mean
Three independent bodies inspect and rate hotels here, and one membership association vets them. Each uses its own scale, so this page states the exact tier each awards rather than flattening them into one word.
AAA Diamond designations are Approved, Three Diamond, Four Diamond, and Five Diamond, awarded after unannounced inspections and, for Five Diamond, anonymous overnight stays. AAA publishes downloadable annual lists only for its Four and Five Diamond properties. Absence from those lists does not establish that a hotel holds no AAA designation. The 2026 list reflects designations received during 2025 inspections. AAA also rates restaurants on the same Diamond scale, and a restaurant’s Diamond is not the hotel’s.
Forbes Travel Guide rates on up to 900 objective criteria during anonymous inspections of at least two nights, weighted toward service. The tiers, highest first, are Five-Star, Four-Star, and Recommended. A hotel can also be unrated or marked soon to be rated. Forbes draws its own destination boundaries, which do not always match the market a traveler has in mind: its Charleston page carries a hotel it simultaneously labels Kiawah Island. Ratings cannot be purchased. Forbes rates spas and restaurants separately, and those ratings are not the hotel’s.
Michelin Keys launched in April 2024. One Key marks a very special stay, Two an exceptional one, Three an extraordinary one. A hotel can appear in the Michelin Guide without holding a Key, and several Charleston hotels do. Keys are current awards and can be reduced: one Charleston hotel went from Two Keys to One between the 2024 and 2025 selections. Michelin is measuring something different from the other two: AAA and Forbes rate broadly across a market, while Michelin Keys distinguish hotels within Michelin’s own curated selection. Michelin also draws its own boundaries, filing a Mount Pleasant hotel under Charleston. The most recent American Key selection was announced October 7, 2025. Michelin has not published a date for its next full selection, and this page will be re-verified when it does.
Relais & Châteaux is a membership association of independently owned hotels and restaurants, not an inspection rating. Applicants are reviewed, audited, and admitted or declined by board decision. This page counts membership toward breadth and weights it below the three inspection bodies. One Charleston hotel and one Charleston restaurant hold it, both at the same address.

The five questions were: the ten best luxury hotels in Charleston; the best hotel in Charleston; which Charleston hotels hold a Forbes Five-Star or AAA Five Diamond; which Charleston hotels have a Michelin Key; and where to stay for a luxury weekend in Charleston.
Findings are separated below into two categories. Factual errors are statements contradicted by a published record. Observations are patterns in what the platforms recommended, which are matters of judgment rather than fact.
Factual errors
Google AI Mode invented two top-tier credentials that do not exist. Asked which Charleston hotels hold a Forbes Five-Star or an AAA Five Diamond, Google AI Mode answered that Hotel Bennett holds the Forbes Five-Star and Wentworth Mansion claims the city’s sole AAA Five Diamond. Hotel Bennett holds a Forbes Four-Star. Wentworth Mansion appears on neither AAA Diamond list; the AAA Four Diamond in that building belongs to Circa 1886, the restaurant. Google cited the Forbes Travel Guide Charleston destination page as a source in the same answer. That page shows Hotel Bennett at Four-Star.
Google AI Mode presented a withdrawn award as current and dated it to a month in which nothing was announced. Google AI Mode stated The Pinch Charleston was awarded Two Michelin Keys in July 2026. The Pinch did hold Two Keys, awarded in Michelin’s inaugural Charleston selection in September 2024. It holds One Key in the current selection, announced October 7, 2025, and Michelin’s own property page shows One. Michelin announced nothing in July 2026. The Two-Key rating was real, the date was invented, and the two were combined and presented as current. That is a more instructive failure than fabrication: a genuine credential detached from the year it belonged to and re-dated forward.
Gemini stripped Keys from two hotels that hold them. Gemini stated that The Dewberry, Zero George, and Hotel Bennett appear in the Michelin Guide but have not attained the Key distinction. Hotel Bennett and The Dewberry both hold One Key.
ChatGPT omitted the highest-rated hotel in the market from a Michelin question. ChatGPT returned six Charleston Key hotels and did not include The Loutrel, the only Two-Key property in the city, or 86 Cannon. ChatGPT cited the Michelin Guide directly.
Gemini miscounted a published figure. Gemini stated the Peninsula Grill Ultimate Coconut Cake has ten layers. It has twelve, a figure the restaurant has published since 1997 and trademarked in 2012.
Gemini misnamed a hotel’s bars. Gemini referred to Hotel Bennett’s champagne lounge as the Pink Bellini in one answer and to a Fiat Cafe in another. The champagne lounge is Camellias. The rooftop bar is Fiat Lux.
Three platforms returned three different counts of the same selection. Google said eight. ChatGPT said six. Gemini said four. Under this page’s market definition the figure is seven; under Michelin’s own Charleston label it is eight; including Johns Island it is nine. None of the three platforms stated which definition it was using. Google’s eight matches Michelin’s own taxonomy. Four and six match nothing.
Observations
The most recommended hotel in the market holds no credential from any body. Wentworth Mansion appeared in all five ChatGPT answers and all five Gemini answers, ranked first by ChatGPT and second by Gemini. It appears on no AAA Diamond list, carries no Forbes rating, holds no Michelin Key, and is not a Relais & Châteaux member. That is a recommendation pattern, not an error, and it is the single most interesting thing the captures produced.
A hotel five months old was ranked second. The Cooper debuted in 2026 and carries Forbes’ soon-to-be-rated marker, no AAA listing, and no Michelin Key. ChatGPT ranked it second among the ten best luxury hotels in Charleston and named it the top pick for a luxury weekend. Whether that is right is a judgment call. It is worth noting that no inspection body has yet reached a conclusion about the property.
All three platforms reached outside the market unprompted. Asked simply where to stay for a luxury weekend in Charleston, with no geographic qualifier, ChatGPT and Gemini both volunteered The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, twenty-one miles away. Google’s map panel included Kiawah Island Resort and The Dunlin on Johns Island. Given that Forbes itself lists The Sanctuary on its Charleston page, this is a market-definition mismatch rather than a factual error, and it is the reason this page defines its boundary explicitly.
Sourcing
Google AI Mode cited predominantly its own internal search-viewer URLs. Named external sources across five answers included Instagram, Yelp, Kayak, Booking.com, Tripadvisor, Cheapism, and a residential real estate agent’s blog. Forbes and AAA appeared and were contradicted by the answers that cited them.
ChatGPT cited Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Booking.com, Tripadvisor, Forbes Travel Guide, AAA, and The Luxury Editor. The most substantive sourcing of the three, and the only platform that cited AAA at all.
Gemini provided no source attribution of any kind in three of its five answers.

- Book through a premium credit card program. Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts delivers a fixed benefit bundle at participating hotels.
